How Much Does It Cost to Design & Build a 1,000 Sq Ft Restaurant in India?

For a 1,000 sq ft restaurant, the area is fixed. The budget is not. A 1,000 sq ft shell can become a compact QSR, a neighbourhood café, a casual dining restaurant or a highly customised premium concept. Each version can require a different kitchen, services, seating density, furniture, finish level and build programme.

So the most useful starting point is to separate the published interior benchmark from the rest of the opening budget.

Step 1: Calculate the broad interior benchmark

Using the restaurant-interior ranges published in our restaurant interior design cost guide, a 1,000 sq ft project gives the following indicative interior-only arithmetic.

Interior level1,000 sq ft indicative calculation
Budget / functional₹800–₹1,200/sq ft → approximately ₹8–12 lakh
Mid-range₹1,500–₹2,500/sq ft → approximately ₹15–25 lakh
Premium / highly customised₹2,800–₹5,000+/sq ft → approximately ₹28–50 lakh+
Interior benchmark, not an all-in opening cost. Do not treat these figures as an all-in restaurant-opening quotation. They are broad interior benchmarks. Your kitchen equipment, major MEP/HVAC, statutory works, signage, technology, professional fees and site-specific upgrades may be additional depending on the scope.

Step 2: Build the complete project budget stack

Interior & civil works

Partitions, flooring, wall/ceiling finishes, fixed joinery, counters and architectural elements.

Commercial kitchen

Equipment, refrigeration, fabrication, exhaust hoods, storage and specialist kitchen systems.

Electrical

Distribution, cabling, DBs, power points, equipment loads and lighting circuits.

HVAC + ventilation

Comfort cooling, fresh air, kitchen exhaust, ducting and related coordination.

Plumbing + drainage

Water, waste, floor drains, grease-related requirements, wash areas and equipment connections.

Furniture

Loose chairs/tables, banquettes, upholstery and any custom furniture.

Lighting

Architectural, decorative, emergency and control elements depending on scope.

Signage + façade

Brand visibility, external signage, glazing/portal elements and landlord-approved façade work.

Design + professional services

Concept, 3D, technical drawings, MEP, BOQ/PMC/consultants as appointed.

Contingency

Allow for site discoveries, approved scope changes, substitutions and coordination issues.

Three 1,000 sq ft restaurant scenarios

ScenarioWhat usually changes
Lean / functional setupSimple finish palette, standard furniture, limited custom fabrication, controlled feature spend, efficient kitchen scope
Standard / branded setupStronger material mix, custom counter/joinery, layered lighting, brand signage, considered furniture and guest experience
Premium / experience-ledHigher customisation, specialist materials, bespoke furniture, decorative lighting, acoustic/feature elements and more complex detailing

A 1,000 sq ft restaurant still needs ruthless planning

At this size, every back-of-house decision affects the dining area. Oversize storage, inefficient kitchen circulation or a poorly placed washroom can reduce revenue-generating seats. On the other hand, forcing too many covers into the plan can make service difficult and damage the guest experience.

The best early design exercise is not “How many chairs can we fit?” It is “What operating model makes this footprint work?”

Five decisions that change the budget fastest

  1. Whether the site is raw, warm shell or an existing restaurant
  2. Whether cooking is light, medium or heavy
  3. Whether major HVAC/exhaust routes already exist
  4. Whether the design uses standard or highly customised fabrication
  5. Whether the landlord/building requires significant compliance or service upgrades

Where to save – without making the restaurant look cheap

  • Simplify geometry before downgrading every material
  • Invest in one or two strong brand-defining elements
  • Use durable commercial finishes in high-contact zones
  • Standardise joinery dimensions and details
  • Reduce wet work and site-fabricated complexity where possible
  • Coordinate MEP before ceiling and joinery are frozen
  • Choose locally available materials with reliable lead times

Estimate your interior benchmark

Indicative interior-only range ₹15–25 lakh ₹1,500–₹2,500 per sq ft × 1,000 sq ft

Interior benchmark only. Kitchen equipment, major MEP/HVAC, statutory works, signage, technology, professional fees and site upgrades may be additional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ₹10 lakh enough for a 1,000 sq ft restaurant?

It may be within the broad interior-only range for a very functional setup, but the complete project could require additional kitchen, MEP, HVAC, furniture, signage and site-specific work. Scope matters more than the headline number.

What is a realistic mid-range interior budget for 1,000 sq ft?

Using SprintCo’s published benchmark, the arithmetic for a mid-range interior is approximately ₹15–25 lakh before considering all project-specific exclusions.

Does restaurant kitchen equipment fall inside the per-sq-ft rate?

Not automatically. Commercial kitchen equipment is often separate and should be budgeted from the menu and equipment schedule.

Can a 1,000 sq ft restaurant be designed for 40–50 seats?

Possibly, but seat count depends on kitchen/BOH needs, table mix, circulation, washrooms, service model and local requirements. A layout review is more reliable than a generic seat-per-square-foot assumption.

How do I get a more accurate estimate?

Share the floor plan, city, format, menu direction, kitchen intensity and intended finish level. A site- and scope-based estimate will be far more useful than a national average.
